CHAPTER 8

“You okay?” Aaron asks.

“No,” I say as I try to clean myself up a little. I wipe my mouth with the back of my hands and try to breathe. “What—what just happened?”

“I was gonna take off toward the east side of town but I don’t really know where we’re going,” says Aaron.

The parking lot of the strip mall is empty and the pet supply shop where Mrs. Lambert gets the food for her lizards has a sign hanging in the front window that now says Out of Business.

“Right,” I say as I gather myself and try not to puke on Aaron’s shoes. “We should follow Casey’s car. Did you see it?”

“I saw which way he went,” Aaron says. “I can go see if I can get eyes on him. You ready to go back up?”

I’m not but we’re here and the only other option is going home and waiting for those guys with the symbol on their jackets to show themselves again. I take a deep breath, give Aaron a nod, then shut my eyes tight. I’m surrounded by dark and cold again, the feeling of the ground moving from under my feet. A rush of air. This time it lasts for what feels like forever and when the ground is firmly under me again, I open my eyes to find that we’re standing on top of a warehouse in a part of the city I don’t recognize.

I sink to my knees. “Don’t puke. Don’t puke. Don’t puke.”

Aaron is at my side, with his hand on my back.

“How much further do we have to go?” I ask. “I don’t think I can keep going like this.”

“I think we’re already here,” he says quietly.

I glance up and, in the darkness directly across from us, is a large gray warehouse surrounded by a high fence with barbed wire running along the top of it. Spotlights illuminate the driveway as a truck waits for the gate to open in front of it. Someone in a uniform comes out of a small guardhouse, speaks to the driver, then returns to his station as the gate rolls open and the truck passes through.

Aaron scoots closer to me and slings his arm around my shoulders. Our bodies are instantly obscured by a swirling black mist. We watch in silence as a car turns onto the street, its headlights beaming. As it gets closer I can see that it’s a black sports car with a white stripe right down the middle.

“That’s Casey’s car,” I say.

I expect him to zoom by. He made it seem like he’d just found out about this place and I can’t imagine him just waltzing up to the gate.

“He’s just gonna go in?” Aaron asks.

I reach for my phone so that I can take some pictures but realize I’ve left it at Aaron’s house. It’s probably for the best because my location’s on and the last thing I need is for my mom to see that I’m on the other side of town and not in Aaron’s room.
